The 220 Project
(a WORK IN PROGRESS)
Did you know that for someone to achieve reading fluency in English, they only need to know 220 common sight words. These are also known as Dolch sight words. Between 50-75% of all words used in schoolbooks, library books, newspapers and magazines are part of the list.
Though the list is called “sight” words, they are not visual words. For dyslexics and visual learners they are just more random letters on a page with no visual reference for recall. As dyslexics we thought of a way that we could improve the process especially for children, like ourselves, who struggled with the traditional way of learning.
How it works:
First thought was to develop an illustrative app that thought all the 220 sight words. A word pops up on the screen and there is a prompt to trace the word with your finger. Once you have traced it, the illustration is revealed and you can interact with the image. The sentence provides context and use of the word and you can sound it out and /or listen to the sentence.
This can also be developed into a double sided deck of cards. We would love to work with other illustrators visual learners, developers, humans who have a passion for this type of work and learning aid.
If you want to learn more about the project or to get involved please email.
This is Hannah and myself (Ciara, the shorter one). We started this passion project together as we are both dyslexic and wanted to do something to help others who may be going through the same struggles we did in school. This project was inspired by a talk I attend in Chicago where Dr. Temple Grandin was speaking. I highly recommend seeing her if you can. Listening to her talk made so many things click for me. If you have time here is a link to her Ted Talk.
Big thank you to Molly Stapleton, writer extrodinare for helping with the name.
